19th Someries Scout Group

Be Prepared

The Boy Scouts, as they were first called, were formed by Lord Robert Baden-Powell in 1907. He put his knowledge and skill of gaining information about hostile territories from Indian and African Scouts into the training of boys with the emphasis on self reliance and a moral code of conduct which became the hallmark of the Scouting Movement.

"The Left Handshake"

In 1890 Colonel Baden-Powell entered the capital city of the Ashanti people in Ghana, Africa. He was met by one of the chiefs who came to him holding out his left hand. Baden-Powell held out his right hand in return but the chief said 'No, in my country the bravest of the brave shake with their left hand'. So this began the 'left handshake' of the worldwide Scouting movement.

19th Someries - A Short History.

Our Scout Group was first formed in 1934 and then it was known as the "19th Luton, 31st Beds. (St. Christopher’s) Boy Scout Group" We were in the Luton Northern Division.

St Christopher's (Luton) as they were known during the 1950's and 1960's used to do very well in the many competitions and challenges set by the County during these years. They attended various County Camps across Bedfordshire.

In 1955 the group celebrated its 21st birthday with the celebrations held in the church grounds on 2nd July. These included a parade, afternoon tea, activities, an open air service and finished with an evening campfire and singsong.

In 1972 we became known as 19th Someries (Luton) Scout Group.

Our 60th Birthday was celebrated in 1994. We had a group outing to Yarmouth. We also held an open afternoon at the church hall with displays of our work. Past and present members, exec committee and district team were invited. A Beaver designed our 60th Birthday badge which we now wear on our scarves.

Our 70th Birthday was celebrated in 2004. This time we held a BBQ and fun afternoon at the church hall. There were displays of archive and current material including uniforms and lots of photographs past and present. We also had activities and a bouncy castle for the young and young at heart!
